The maximum capacity varies by motherboard, CPU’s memory controller, BIOS/UEFI support and sometimes the operating system.

If there were to be an extra 16 GB added, then there would be an estimated total of:

4. Number of RAM Slots

There are also two or four memory slots on a desktop motherboard, and some laptop models may have just a single or a couple of slots. On some newer laptops, computers may even feature soldered-on memory.

So the more highly rated a RAM is, it does not mean that it is the best RAM for all systems.

Can You Mix Different RAM Speeds?

For certain systems, multiple speeds can be supported, with the modules potentially running at a lower-than-maximum speed.

For instance, one module may be capable of 3200 MT/s, and another may be capable of 2666 MT/s operation, but be capable of running slower.

However, this is not true on all platforms.

Preferably matching memory modules or memory modules with a close match are better to provide greatest stability and predictable performance.

6. ECC vs Non-ECC RAM

ECC: Error-Correcting Code.
